Abstract

Purpose: This study was designed to construct a structural model of impulsive suicidal ideation in adolescents.

Methods: The subjects consisted of 601 adolescents. Data was collected by questionnaires from July 1st, 2008 to July 24th, 2008. Data analysis was done with SPSS/WIN 10.0 for descriptive statistics and a PC-LISREL 8.53 program for Covariance structural analysis.

Results: According to the modified model, depression was found to have the most significant direct effect on suicidal ideation. Hopelessness, use of alcohol, and anger expression were also found to have a significant direct effect on suicidal ideation. Life stress, hopelessness, social support, abuse experience, anger expression, and impulsiveness were found to have a significant indirect effect on suicidal ideation. The variables of this modified model explained 48% of the variance in suicidal ideation.

Conclusion: These results suggest that adolescents¡¯ suicidal ideation can be decreased by managing depression, hopelessness, life stress, drinking, and impulsiveness and increasing social support and anger management. Based on the outcomes of this study, it is necessary to develop educational contents for a gatekeeper and prevention program for suicide.
